Marketing Cloud Certification Path

The Salesforce Certified Marketing Cloud Engagement Specialist is the entry point to the Marketing Cloud path — Email Studio sends, Content Builder, Automation Studio and Journey Builder, the subscriber and data model underneath them, and the tracking that tells you what actually happened. Salesforce positions it as the foundation credential for Marketing Cloud Engagement, ahead of its consultant- and developer-level Marketing Cloud credentials. If you administer the wider Salesforce platform instead, the Salesforce Certified Platform Administrator covers a completely different surface — org configuration, sharing, reporting, Flow and Agentforce — with almost no overlap with this exam.

Frequently asked questions

The questions marketers usually ask before booking the Marketing Cloud Engagement Specialist exam.

What does the Salesforce Marketing Cloud Engagement Specialist exam cover? #

Five sections, and the weights are Salesforce’s own. Marketing Automation (26%) and Subscriber and Data Management (26%) are joint-heaviest — Automation Studio starting sources and the SQL query, import, file transfer and data extract activities on one side, and lists versus data extensions, sendable data extensions, subscriber and contact keys and the All Subscribers list on the other. Content Creation and Delivery follows at 24%, covering Content Builder blocks and templates, personalisation strings and working-level AMPscript, testing and previewing, A/B testing, send classifications and delivery profiles, and the difference between a user-initiated, triggered, scheduled and automated send. Insights and Analytics is 14% — tracking metrics, unique versus total measures, and reading a send well enough to say what to change next. Email Marketing Best Practices is 10%, covering permission-based marketing, CAN-SPAM obligations, unsubscribe handling, sender reputation and deliverability, and hard versus soft bounces.

Is this the same exam as the Marketing Cloud Email Specialist? #

Yes. Salesforce renamed the credential from Marketing Cloud Email Specialist to Marketing Cloud Engagement Specialist on 24 July 2026, and stated that the exam content was unchanged by the rename. Study material published under the old name is still valid. One quirk worth knowing: the Trailhead URL still uses the legacy slug, so the official page reads marketingcloudengagementspecialist while older links and some study sites continue to say Email Specialist.

Does this exam have an exam code like AZ-104? #

No. Salesforce identifies this credential by name rather than by an alphanumeric exam code, so there is no official code to quote. If a study site presents one, treat that as a sign it is working from a stale or invented source — check the credential name against Salesforce’s own page instead.

How long is the exam and what score do I need? #

90 minutes for 60 multiple-choice questions, plus up to five unscored questions that do not count toward your result. The passing score is 67%. It is delivered proctored, either onsite at a testing centre or online, and costs $200 USD with a $100 USD retake fee. The credential is maintained with an annual maintenance badge on Trailhead.

Do I need experience before taking it? #

There is no hard prerequisite, so you can book it whenever you like. Salesforce recommends its Marketing Cloud Engagement MKT 101 course and three to six months of hands-on experience, and that recommendation is worth taking seriously — the questions tend to hand you a scenario and ask which tool you should reach for, not what a feature is called.

Which domain should I study first? #

Start with Subscriber and Data Management, even though it only ties for the heaviest weight rather than leading outright. Lists, data extensions, sendable versus non-sendable, and the subscriber key underpin almost everything in Marketing Automation, because a SQL query activity and a journey entry source are both really questions about where your data lives and how it is keyed. Once that is second nature, move to Marketing Automation, where the recurring decision is whether an Automation Studio automation or a Journey Builder journey is the right tool.
