Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the Pomodoro Technique?

The Pomodoro Technique is a time management method developed by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s. You work in focused intervals (traditionally 25 minutes) called 'pomodoros', separated by short breaks (5 minutes). After four pomodoros, you take a longer break (15–30 minutes). This rhythm helps maintain deep focus while preventing burnout.

2. Why are the focus sessions 25 minutes by default?

Research suggests 25 minutes is long enough to make meaningful progress on a task, but short enough to maintain intense concentration. However, everyone is different — our timer lets you customise sessions from 1 to 90 minutes. Many developers prefer 50-minute sessions, while students often find 25 minutes ideal.

3. Does the Pomodoro Technique work for studying?

Absolutely. The technique is especially effective for studying because it combats procrastination, creates urgency, and forces regular review breaks where your brain consolidates information. Many students report significantly better retention when using timed study sessions with breaks.

4. Is my data saved? Is it private?

All your data — tasks, settings, and statistics — is saved in your browser's localStorage. Nothing is ever sent to a server. Your data stays on your device, completely private. If you clear your browser data, your stats will be reset. Standard anonymous page analytics (Google Analytics) apply to all pages on the site, but no tool-specific data — passwords, images, palettes, etc. — is ever collected or transmitted.

5. Can I customise the timer intervals?

Yes! In the Settings tab you can adjust focus duration (1–90 min), short break (1–30 min), long break (1–60 min), and how many sessions before a long break. You can also toggle auto-start for breaks and focus sessions.

6. What are the ambient sounds?

We offer six ambient soundscapes — Rain, Café, Forest, Ocean, White Noise, and Lo-fi — all generated in real time using the Web Audio API. No audio files are downloaded. These sounds help mask distracting noise and create an immersive focus environment.

7. Will the timer work if I switch browser tabs?

Yes. The timer uses timestamp-based tracking, so it remains accurate even if the browser throttles the tab. You'll also see the countdown in your browser tab title, and receive a notification when the timer ends (if you've enabled notifications).

8. Can I track tasks alongside the timer?

Yes — the Tasks tab lets you create a task list, set estimated pomodoros per task, mark a task as your current focus, and track actual pomodoros completed. Tasks persist in localStorage between sessions.

9. Is this tool still being improved?

Yes! This is a V1 release and we're actively improving it based on user feedback. If you have suggestions, find a bug, or want a new feature, please visit our Community Feedback page at aguidetocloud.com/feedback/ — every piece of feedback is read and acted on.
