Frequently asked questions

The Purview questions I get most from people new to data protection — usually ‘where do I even start?’ and ‘do I need an E5 licence to follow along?’

Do I need Microsoft 365 E5 to use Purview? #

For the full feature set — yes. Purview’s most powerful features (Insider Risk Management, Communication Compliance, Advanced eDiscovery, Sensitivity Labels with auto-labelling) require Microsoft 365 E5 or specific E5 add-ons (Information Protection and Governance, Insider Risk, Compliance). For basic Purview (Sensitivity Labels manual-only, basic DLP, retention policies), E3 covers you. For learning and labs, get a free M365 developer tenant — comes with full E5 sandbox.

What's the right order to learn Purview? #

My order, based on what trips up most beginners: (1) Sensitivity Labels (the foundation — everything else builds on classification); (2) Data Loss Prevention (DLP) policies (your first enforcement mechanism); (3) Retention Labels and Policies (compliance lifecycle); (4) Insider Risk Management (advanced, E5 only); (5) Communication Compliance and Audit (operational, but they assume the foundations above). Don’t try to learn them all at once.

How is Purview different from Microsoft 365 compliance centre? #

Microsoft renamed and consolidated the old Compliance Center, Security & Compliance Center, and Information Protection portals into the unified Microsoft Purview portal in 2023. Same underlying capabilities, new front door at compliance.microsoft.com (now redirects to purview.microsoft.com). If your study material refers to the Compliance Center or Office 365 Security & Compliance, it’s the same product — just an older screenshot.

Does this Purview lab cover the SC-401 or SC-400 exam content? #

Yes — this masterclass covers the core scope of SC-401 (Information Protection and Compliance Administrator, the current exam since 2025). It includes Sensitivity Labels, DLP, retention, and the unified Purview portal experience. SC-400 (the previous exam) retired in mid-2024 and SC-401 is its replacement. Pair this video with the official SC-401 study guide for a complete prep path.

What's the most common mistake when setting up Purview Sensitivity Labels? #

Skipping the label hierarchy planning step. Most people start clicking Create label and end up with 20 inconsistent labels that confuse end users. Plan the label tree on paper first (typically: Public / General / Confidential / Highly Confidential, with sub-labels under Confidential for project-specific or department-specific protection). Once published, labels are hard to rename without breaking the user experience. The Microsoft Purview labels reference architecture is the cleanest starting template.
