About the Cybersecurity Practitioner Exam

The Palo Alto Networks Certified Cybersecurity Practitioner certification is the tier above the entry Cybersecurity Apprentice in Palo Alto’s role-based framework. It validates that you can apply security concepts and map the Palo Alto Networks portfolio across six domains: cybersecurity fundamentals (AAA, MITRE ATT&CK, the Zero Trust model, APTs, identity and MFA, MDM, secure email), network security (ZTNA, stateless firewalls versus NGFWs with App-ID/User-ID/Content-ID, microsegmentation, CDSS, SSL forward-proxy decryption, OT/IoT, Precision AI), secure access (SASE versus SSE, SWG, Enterprise Browser, RBI, DLP, CASB, SD-WAN, and the Prisma SASE family), cloud security (CSPM versus CWPP, CNAPP, and Cortex Cloud), endpoint security (IOCs, UEBA, EDR versus XDR, Behavioral Threat Prevention, and Cortex XDR), and security operations (threat hunting, incident response, SIEM versus SOAR, Attack Surface Management, Cortex XSOAR/Xpanse/XSIAM, and Unit 42).

Who Should Take This Exam?

This is a foundational-to-intermediate certification for people moving into a cybersecurity career or continuing along a Palo Alto Networks program: aspiring SOC analysts, security and network administrators, cloud and endpoint security practitioners, pre-sales and support engineers, and anyone who has completed the Cybersecurity Apprentice and wants the next step.

No prior certification is required. General IT familiarity helps, but the exam tests security concepts and product-portfolio understanding, not networking-101 fundamentals (OSI layers, subnetting, cabling) - those belong to the entry-level Cybersecurity Apprentice. This exam expects you to tell SIEM from SOAR, IDS from IPS, EDR from XDR, CSPM from CWPP, SASE from SSE, and to place each Palo Alto product in the right family (Strata, Prisma, Cortex).

EDR is endpoint-only; XDR correlates across endpoint, network, cloud, and identity. CSPM finds cloud misconfigurations (posture); CWPP protects running workloads. SASE is SD-WAN plus security; SSE is the security-only subset. And keep the families straight: Strata = network security, Prisma = SASE/access, Cortex = SecOps (including Cortex Cloud, the platform formerly called Prisma Cloud).
