About the NVIDIA-NCP-OUSD Exam

Master the NVIDIA-Certified Professional: OpenUSD Development (NCP-OUSD) exam: reason through LIVRPS composition order, choose between references, payloads and sublayers, pick an instancing style that survives scale, round-trip assets through a DCC without losing fidelity, model attributes and primvars with the right types, debug opinions that silently never arrive, and bind UsdPreviewSurface materials that render the way you intended.

The complete 250-question practice exam for the NVIDIA-Certified Professional: OpenUSD Development (NCP-OUSD) exam. Covers composition including changing the strength of an opinion, the LIVRPS resolution order explained plainly, choosing between referencing, payloads and sublayers, diagnosing why an opinion from one layer never reaches the composed stage, selecting an instancing style appropriate to the scale of the data, referencing one animation from many elements at different time offsets, designing layering strategies for multi-user workflows, judging when variants are and are not the right structuring tool, and preparing an internal asset for delivery to an external party; content aggregation including adding a prototype to a PointInstancer, editing the colour of an instance proxy mesh without breaking its instancing status, hiding instances efficiently, managing instances for reuse in large scenes, and removing properties from instanced component prims in an assembly stage; customizing USD including building a plug-in against a given USD version, building USD from scratch with custom dependencies, creating custom model kinds and custom schemas for proprietary data models, integrating a custom resolver for dynamic asset paths, supporting nonstandard attributes through schemas on import and export, writing a scene index plug-in that emits renderable Hydra prims, and writing an asset resolver that generates in-memory primitives; data exchange including converting USD to formats such as glTF while preserving fidelity, documenting conceptual mappings between USD and another data model such as MaterialX, weighing USDC against USDA for performance, readability and archival, implementing a round-trip pipeline through a DCC, writing a validator that proves the integrity of an exported asset, and writing or extending an exporter, converter or importer; data modeling including adding a primvar to a mesh, choosing value types for attribute data, representing custom metadata, retrieving properties of a prim, tracing the causes of unexpected visual results, and updating the extent attribute after points change; debugging and troubleshooting including recognising when an SdfChangeBlock relieves a performance bottleneck, resolving asset management failures, and working with TfDebug, diagnostic delegates, Trace and TfMallocTag; pipeline development including documenting asset structure guidelines, validating that asset paths are correctly formatted, and integrating resolvers and importers into a working pipeline; and visualization including assigning and binding UsdPreviewSurface materials and building a shading network that reads diffuse colour from a primvar. Frequently asked questions

The questions USD pipeline developers usually ask before preparing for NVIDIA’s OpenUSD Development Professional exam.

What does NVIDIA NCP-OUSD cover? #

Eight scored domains, using NVIDIA’s own published weights, which sum to exactly 100. Composition is the largest at 23% — the LIVRPS resolution order, choosing between references, payloads and sublayers, changing the strength of an opinion, layering for multi-user workflows, and diagnosing why an opinion never reaches the composed stage. Then Data Exchange at 15%, covering conversion to formats such as glTF, USDC versus USDA, DCC round-trips and export validators; Pipeline Development at 14%, covering asset structure guidelines, asset path validation and integrating resolvers and importers; Data Modeling at 13%, covering primvars, attribute value types, custom metadata and the extent attribute; Debugging and Troubleshooting at 11%, covering TfDebug, diagnostic delegates, Trace, TfMallocTag and SdfChangeBlock; Content Aggregation at 10%, covering PointInstancer prototypes and instance proxies; Visualization at 8%, covering UsdPreviewSurface binding and primvar-driven shading networks; and Customizing USD at 6%, covering custom schemas, kinds, asset resolvers and scene index plug-ins.

Is NCP-OUSD a hands-on lab exam? #

No. It is a 120-minute proctored exam of roughly 60 to 70 multiple-choice questions delivered through Certiverse. The word hands-on does appear on NVIDIA’s exam page, but it refers to a training course listed alongside the exam rather than to the exam format itself — worth checking carefully, because it is easy to misread as a lab requirement. Every sample question in the official study guide is four-option single-answer, with no select-all-that-apply items.

Do I need another NVIDIA certification first? #

No. There is no hard prerequisite. NVIDIA recommends two to three years of hands-on experience developing with OpenUSD, together with working knowledge of Python or C++. This is a professional-tier exam, so questions expect you to reason about interacting composition arcs, API behaviour and pipeline consequences rather than recall definitions.

Which domain should I study first? #

Composition, at 23%, is nearly a quarter of the exam and is the spine everything else rests on. LIVRPS reasoning resurfaces throughout the other domains — a Debugging question about an opinion that never takes effect is a composition question wearing different clothes, and the same is true of layering decisions in Pipeline Development. Study composition until you can predict the resolution order without looking it up, then move to Data Exchange and Pipeline Development, which together add another 29%.

What score do I need to pass, and how long is it valid? #

NVIDIA does not publish a passing score for this exam, so treat any specific percentage you see quoted elsewhere with caution. The certification is valid for two years. The exam costs $200 USD and is delivered online remote-proctored through Certiverse.
