Get the five operation modes straight first, because they gate every other feature: Reverse Proxy is the default and the only mode with the full delivery feature set (SSL offload, load balancing, HTTP Content Routing); True Transparent Proxy is a Layer-2 bridge that preserves the client IP and can modify traffic and return block pages but has no Layer-3 delivery; Transparent Inspection is inspect-only (it can reset a violating connection but cannot offload TLS, rewrite content, or return a custom block page, and it does not support TLS 1.3); WCCP uses a redirect topology; and Offline Protection is a passive/mirrored deployment that can detect and send TCP resets but cannot reliably block. Know that FortiWeb has five distinct detection engines you must never conflate — signatures (Known Attacks), ML Based Anomaly Detection (an HMM model plus FortiGuard threat models), ML Based Bot Detection (an SVM behavioural model), ML Based API Protection (schema/threat/sensitive-data learning), and Threat Analytics (cloud incident aggregation, not an inline action). Remember that Known Bots analyses the User-Agent and is not machine learning, that Credential Stuffing Defense needs FortiGuard updates (there is no built-in breach database), and that FortiWeb uses Administrative Domains (ADOMs), not FortiGate-style VDOMs. Finally, know that actions are module-specific (Known Attacks, Parameter Validation, Cookie Security and DLP each expose different action lists), and that most delivery and token-inserting features (HTTP Content Routing, CSRF Protection, SSL offload) require an inline mode such as Reverse Proxy.
