The ECES (212-81) exam validates a practitioner’s working knowledge of modern and classical cryptography: not just naming algorithms, but knowing the parameters, the correct modes, and why insecure choices fail. It covers the history of cryptography and classical ciphers (Caesar, Vigenere, scytale, Playfair, Enigma, the one-time pad, and Kerckhoffs’s principle); symmetric cryptography and hashing (block versus stream ciphers, Feistel networks, DES and 3DES and the meet-in-the-middle attack, AES and the AES finalists, the ECB/CBC/CTR/GCM cipher modes, and the MD, SHA-1, SHA-2, SHA-3, RIPEMD, and Whirlpool hash families with HMAC); number theory and asymmetric cryptography (primes and modular arithmetic, Euler’s totient and Fermat’s little theorem, RSA, Diffie-Hellman, ElGamal, elliptic-curve cryptography, and DSA/ECDSA); the applications of cryptography (digital signatures and certificates, PKI, SSL/TLS, IPsec with AH and ESP, SSH, Wi-Fi encryption, full-disk encryption, PGP and S/MIME, and steganography); and cryptanalysis (frequency analysis, Kasiski examination, birthday and meet-in-the-middle attacks, rainbow tables, and side-channel attacks). 💡 Study tip: Symmetric Cryptography and Hashes is 44% of the exam, so nail the exact numbers ECES loves to test: AES has a fixed 128-bit block with 128/192/256-bit keys and 10/12/14 rounds (Twofish and Serpent were AES finalists — Rijndael won); DES is a 56-bit key / 64-bit block / 16-round Feistel cipher, and three-key 3DES gives only about 112 bits of real security because of the meet-in-the-middle attack; ECB leaks patterns and has no IV, only GCM/CCM authenticate, and a CTR/GCM nonce must never be reused; MD5 is 128-bit and SHA-1 is 160-bit (both collision-broken), and SHA-3 uses a sponge, not Merkle-Damgard. On the asymmetric side, remember RSA rests on factoring while Diffie-Hellman (key agreement only, not encryption) and DSA rest on discrete logs, and hashing and Base64 encoding are not encryption.
