AB-100: Agentic AI Business Solutions Architect

Solution architects and senior developers designing multi-agent AI systems for enterprise — people choosing between Copilot Studio, Foundry, Azure AI Search, MCP, and Dynamics 365 AI to build a coherent business solution. The cert tests design judgement (which service for which scenario), not coding. Two years of hands-on Microsoft AI tooling experience is the realistic prerequisite, even though Microsoft doesn't require it formally.

[AI-200](/cert-tracker/ai-200/) is for developers building specific AI workloads (chat apps, document intelligence, vision pipelines). AB-100 is for architects designing the whole solution — agent orchestration, Copilot Studio + Foundry integration, D365 AI tie-ins, governance, MCP for tool calling, responsible AI patterns. Think of AI-200 as building the engine, and AB-100 as designing the car. Most architects pass AI-200 first to ground themselves before tackling AB-100.

Strongly yes. Copilot Studio appears across all three domains — multi-agent design, deployment patterns, governance. Reading docs isn't enough. Get a Copilot Studio trial, build at least 2-3 agents with different topic structures, integrate one MCP server, and test handoff between agents. Microsoft also assumes you've used [Azure AI Foundry](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/ai-foundry/) for model selection and grounding patterns.

Eight to twelve weeks of intensive study for experienced practitioners. Longer if you haven't worked with Copilot Studio or Foundry yet. Microsoft updates AB-100 skills measured roughly every 6 to 9 months — faster than non-AI certs. Renewal is annual and free via Microsoft Learn assessments, so currency stays inexpensive. The architectural patterns (multi-agent design, grounding, RAG, responsible AI) outlast specific product features, which is why this cert is one of the more durable AI certs to invest in right now. Honest take — yes, if you want to stay current as a solution architect in the Power Platform / D365 / Copilot Studio space. [PL-600](/cert-tracker/pl-600/) retires 30 June 2026 and AB-100 is Microsoft's closest expert-level option. The architect mindset (designing across services for an organization) transfers cleanly. What's new: the AI agent design layer — multi-agent orchestration, MCP, A2A protocol, Foundry + Copilot Studio integration, responsible AI patterns. Plan 6-10 weeks with Copilot Studio + Foundry before sitting it. There's no automatic migration — you have to pass AB-100 separately.

Honest take — this is a big jump. [MB-240](/cert-tracker/mb-240/) was D365 Field Service functional consulting; AB-100 is enterprise AI solution architecture. Most MB-240 holders aren't ready for AB-100 as the next exam.
