Why can't I see which question I'm on during a practice test?
The question
I’m on a 50-question practice test but I don’t the stage I’m in
The answer
Hi — thanks for flagging this. You found a real bug, not a missing feature, and you’re the first person to spot it.
Short answer: the counter was always there, you just couldn’t see it.
In fullscreen the quiz has a toolbar across the top showing Q 4/50, a progress bar, your timer, your running score and the Exit button. On desktop that whole toolbar was being drawn underneath the site’s navigation bar, so it was completely invisible. On a phone you’d have seen your position at the bottom of the screen; on a laptop you’d have seen nothing at all. So “I don’t know the stage I’m in” was exactly right — there was genuinely nothing on screen telling you.
The cause was mine, and it was a layering mistake. The fullscreen quiz panel sat on a lower stacking layer than the site header, so the header painted straight over the top of it. The quiz’s own toolbar never stood a chance — it was trapped underneath its own container. Fixed and deployed today.
Hard-refresh the practice page (Ctrl+Shift+R, or Cmd+Shift+R on a Mac) and you should now see, across the top:
Q 4/50— where you are in the run- a progress bar
- your timer
- your running score
- the Exit button
Two things came out of it that I’d rather tell you than quietly fix. The five-minute warning was being hidden by exactly the same bug, so that’s back as well. And I’ve added an automated check that now runs before every release — if that toolbar is ever covered again, the build fails instead of shipping. This one survived as long as it did precisely because nothing was watching for it.
One question back to you, because your wording could mean two different things:
- The position indicator at the top — that’s what’s now fixed, or
- A number on the question card itself — e.g. “Question 4 of 50” sitting just above the question text.
If you meant 2, or you’d like both, say so and I’ll add it. It’s a small change and it’s a fair ask.
One last thing, in case it looks like a second bug: Question Map · 3/50 answered counts the questions you’ve answered, not where you are. If you skip ahead with Next it deliberately won’t move. The Q 4/50 counter is the one that tracks your position.
Thanks again for taking the time to write it up.
